Video poker is one of the easiest online casino games to learn and play. It also gives you great chances of winning, with most games boasting an expected Return to Player of more than 100%. The game has grown in popularity over the years and new varieties are released all the time. Below, we take a look at the player’s favourite video poker game, Jacks or Better.
6 September is National Video Poker Day. Today, we look at one of the more popular options offered by online casinos – Jacks or Better video poker.
The easiest way to explain the game is in five simple steps:
• You place a bet
• You’re dealt five cards
• You Hold from 1 to 5 of the cards
• You Draw 1 to 5 new cards
• If your hand appears on the paytable, you win.
Let’s look at each point.
How much you want to bet on your hand is your first big decision. Every hand costs a Bet amount that is calculated like this: the Bet = Coins x Coin Size.
Every poker game has different coin sizes. With each deal, you can bet from 1 to 5 coins. The paytable will show you’re the highest payout comes from a Royal Flush when you play 5 coins. So, aim to always play 5 coins per hand.
Once bets are placed, it’s time to play video poker. Click the “Deal” button and you will receive five face up cards. Now it’s time to use your awareness of the paytable and poker hands to choose which cards to keep and which ones to discard.
To hold cards, just click on the card, or the “Hold” button underneath the card.
Once you’re happy with your cards, click “Deal” again and any cards you haven’t held will be returned to the pack. You’ll receive new cards based on how many you held.
Based on your final hand, you may or may not win. If you were playing a multi-hand game, the payout might be different for each separate line.
As video poker continues to grow in popularity, players look for even more excitement on their bets. Casinos now offer the chance to bet on multiple lines in one go. The number of possible lines varies from 4 to 10, 25, all the way up to 100.
The mechanics of the game are the same as a single line game in that your betting decisions affect all the lines. This is a fantastic way to maximise your wins. Any guaranteed win counts on all lines.
On multi-hand games, each line is regarded as a separate bet and the cards are dealt from individual decks. This is why you might get the same card in two hands.
There are plenty of variations of online video poker to enjoy, as well as some incredibly exciting Live Dealer options. If that’s not quite your cup of tea, try out another game, like blackjack or craps and hone your skills on those!
